MAJOR: Your letter instructing me to send Captain Akey's cavalry company to Red Bluffs was received on the 28th ultimo. It has required four days to get in all the detachments and express riders. As no transportation train can be obtained till next Monday, the 4th instant, they cannot be here that day. A competent guide has been secured, who reports a shorter route than by Long Valley. The distance is about 200 miles. Of the company horses eighteen are dead, fort-four unserviceable (twenty of these only from sore backs), and thirty-four serviceable.
