GENERAL: Your letter of the 17th ultimo, reporting assignment of officers to command at posts in the District of Oregon, is approved by the general commanding the department, expect in the case of the new post to be established at Boise, which the general desires should be constructed under the supervision of Major Lugenbeel. The general also alry, regarding the latter's operations against Indians reported as murderes; also your letter of the 13the ultimo.

CAPTAIN: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communications of the 27the and 31st ultimo. The Governor and myself are preparing measures to ascertain the character and extent of any organizations formed or in progress of formation in either Napa or Solano Counties. Should anything be discovered, prompt action will be taken. I hope you may not find it necessary to withdaw the Cyane from the harbor of San Francisco; the presence of a vessel of war there is very important at this time. I beg to assure you, captain, that I shall at all times be ready to co-operte with you maintaining the peace and security of this country.
