SIR: I have to inform you, in answer to your application of this date, that I have given orders for placing in the city four additional companies of infantry, to be quartered at the Harrison Street recruiting depot. These, together with those now in town, will act under the direction of the chief of police to preserve peace and quiet.

SIR: I am instucted by General McDowell to say that Colonel Drum will notify you of the arrival of the troops. The commander of the troops and Major Morton will be instructed to co-operate with you. The general has the matter of Booth's brother in hadn, and will telegraph to the Department as soon he sees gentlemen who has something to tell in relation it.
