In pursuance of Special Orders, Numbers 183, Extract 2, headquarters Nineteenth Army Corps, Department of the Gulf, I hereby assume command of the First Division and of the United States forces in and around Baton Rouge.

My staff is announced as follows: Captain Wickham Hoffman, assistant adjutant-general; Captain George S. Shaw, additional aide-de-camp; Captain John P. Baker, First U. S. Cavalry, aide-de-camp; Lieutenant David Lyon, Seventy-seventh New York Volunteers, aide-de-camp; Captain George M. Franklin, Pennsylvania Volunteers, aide-de-camp. They will be obeyed and respected accordingly.

Other staff officers will be announced as appointed.

GENERAL: Your dispatch of the was received this morning at 9 o'clock. There will be no delay in t he execution of your orders. I shall be ready to move as soon as General Grant's troops can reach this point, and hope to attain the object in view within a week or ten days at outside. I have forwarded a full statement of my purpose and plans by mail. I shall be greatly deficient in cavalry. If you can aid me in this, it will greatly facilitate my work. The duty assigned me is very satisfactory, and I hope to realize all your expectations.
