GENERAL: I am instructed by the major- general commanding to acknowledge the receipt of Your communications of this date relative to the two heavy artillery regiments now serving within Your command. The general directs me to say in reply that he desires that one of the regiments named (whichever one You may choose to select) may be held in readiness to go to Texas, and subject to his orders.
