Please report to me as fully as You can the condition of affairs north of Arkansas River; what steps have been taken toward restoring local civil administration; what security for life and property; what troops You have stationed in that part of the State, and where; in short, a full report. I am postponing my intended visit to Arkansas until the President decides upon the plan I have submitted to him.

There is no necessity of maintaining the garrison in the fortification at Your post. The guns will be sent to Lieutenant Witt, ordnance officer at this place, without delay. All equipments and ammunition should be sent at same time. The officer responsible for the property may accompany and turn over these stores.

Your proposition to withdraw troops except a garrison from Van Buren is approved by the major-general commanding. Are there not too many stores at that place to risk disposing of the services of Captain Steadman, commissary of subsistence?
