Major General JOHN POPE:

Under the surrender of Kirby Smith to Canby 8,000 Missouri rebels are arriving here on foot. Under the agreement Canby agreed they should be sent to their homes. Under orders of quartermaster-general we can give no transportation. Cannot You get an orders from General Grant for us to send them home at Government expense? One thousand arrived to-day.

8. Bvt. Brigadier General William B. Tibbits, having reported for duty at these headquarters, will proceed forthwith by steamer, with his command, to Fort Leavenworth, Kans., and report for duty to Brigadier General R. B. Mitchell, commanding District of North Kansas. The quartermaster's department will furnish the necessary transportation.

9. Brigadier General Thomas J. McKean, having reported for duty at these headquarters, is hereby assigned to, and will at once assume command of, the District of Southwest Missouri, headquarters at Springfield, Mo. The quartermaster's department will furnish transportation for the authorized number of horses and servants.

13. The Forty-third, Forty-eighth, and Fiftieth Regiments Missouri Infantry Volunteers, now serving in the Central District of Missouri, will proceed forthwith to Saint Louis, Mo., and report to Bvt. Brigadier General J. L. Beveridge, commanding Saint Louis District. Colonel C.
