New Orleans, July 5, 1864.Captain Oliver Matthews, assistant adjutant-general, U. S. Volunteers, having reported at these headquarters, in compliance with paragraph 4, Special Orders, Numbers 55, from headquarters Military Division of West Mississippi, is announced as assistant adjutant-general of the Defenses of New Orleans, to date from the 2nd instant, at which time he reported for duty. He will be obeyed and respected accordingly.

M. Levy, the officer commanding advanced post of Confederates near Simsport, La. It will probably be several days before answer is received.
