The general directs me to say that he hears nothing from Plaque-

mine, and at the same time reports are frequently arriving from La

Fourche District that the enemy is crossing the Atchafalaya. If there be anything in these reports the commanding officer at Plaquemine must know the facts.

Captain Baker, of the engineer department, who came from Plaque-

mine to-day, reports that the rumor is very current there that quite a force of General Taylor's command had crossed the Atchafalaya. He also states that most of the traders in Plaquemine are packing up their goods and sending them off. I send this report as received. Shall take every means in my power to keep thoroughly posted. All quiet at this post.
