CAPTAIN: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of yours of the 16th of May informing me that you have ready nearly 500 men to turn over at our next interview, to take place on the 25th instant. In reply I take pleasure to inform you that, in accordance with Major-General Canby's demand and your request, I will birng to our next interview the total number of Federal prisoners under my charge, about 1,800 officers and men. I may possibly de dayed a day or two beyond the appointed time, in consequence of having made an extra trip with the commisioners of General Grant to this department, and I respectfully request that you provide ample transportation for this unusually large number of U. S. prisoners, which I will have the satisfaction to restore to their colors and firesides.
