The President of the United States may be assured that there is less disturbance in Carroll, Putman, and Buchanan Counties, in this State, than at any previous time during the rebellion. The citizens of this district are very generally engaging earnestly inn their legitimate pursuits. I wish the President would give us the source of information he has received.

If you fall back from your present position toward Forsyth the force at least by two squadrons. Major Hart says the grazing is very good on Huzza and Sugar Loaf Prairies. Stop where you can get the first good grazing. Do not hurry about falling, back so much as not to bring out everything. Remain and let the train make two trips, if necessary. Send tow squadrons to or to the vicinity of Berryville that have the least number of serviceable horses. Do not leave any sick or wounded. Drive out all abandoned stock and property that you find in the country, including sheep and cattle.
