Colonel G. W. LOGAN, Commanding Battalion Heavy Artillery:

COLONEL: I am instructed by the general commanding to direct you to proceed with your command at the earliest moment practicable to Columbia to man the heavy guns at that point, take them to Copenhagen, and dispute the passage of the enemy's gun-boats and transports down the Ouachita River. You will march as rapidly as possible. At Minden you will report to Brigadier-General Liddell. He will send to your support a sufficient force of cavalry, of whose line of march he will probably inform you. Inclosed you will find an order* on the chief of artillery and ordnance (Major T. G. Rhett) for 20 stand of serviceable muskets or rifles with accouterments complete, and 50 rounds of ammunition to each musket.
