SIR: Colonel E. S. Bragg, now in command of First Brigade of this division, having been appointed a brigadier-general, as I am advised by telegraph through Lieutenant-General Grant, I request that he be retained in command of the brigade, and that he be regularly assigned to its command as soon as the official notice of his appointment is received from the War Department. I make this request for the good of the service, and in accordance with the known wishes of the brigade.

Circular of 9 this a.m. from headquarters Army of the Potomac, relative to reports twice daily from corps commanders, is received. The head of my column reached the Williams house about 6.30 o'clock, and the corps is now going into position connecting with General Gibbon on the right and on the left, extending across the plank road, picketing, I run to Sturdivant's Mill.
