At the earliest possible moment I sent to recall the expedition sent out yesterday morning beyond the Chickahominy. I has not yet returned, nor have I received any message from you as I excepted to do. I have no water transportation here to move artillery or cavalry, and not daring to the wait longer have sent forwarded the colored regiments and the Eighty-ninth New York, agreeable to the orders received last evening.
