II. Colonel E. N. Hallowell, commanding Second Brigade, will dispatch the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteers and the Thirty-third U. S. Colored Troops to the lower landing, to embark to-night, and will himself at these headquarters for instructions.

III. Brigadier General E. E. Potter will place a regiment of his command, to replace the Thirty-third U. S. Colored Troops, in the rifle-pit to the left of the right battery, and one, to replace the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteers, on the right of the same battery. This disposition will be made at once.

Colonel Babcock, of my staff, has just returned from bearing dispatches to Sherman. As he visited and saw all the army with Sherman I have thought it might prove interesting to you to see him. He will leave in the mail-boat in the morning with a copy of Sherman's letter. *
