Following received from Major J. Stoddard Johnston, assistant adjutant-general, dated Wytheville, December 15, 6.30 p. m.:

The enemy have advanced to a point save miles, beyond marion, Smyth County, and are reported coming in this direction. General Breckinridge, with main force, is at Saltville, against which place a column is reported to have moved. Telegraphic communication with him is cut off. A few hundred reserves only are here to oppose the enemy.
