Major-General DIX:
A contraband from Weldon says very strong and extensive earthworks are constructed on the approaches. He heard that Pettigrew contemplated a raid across the river, while Pryor would occupy us with his command. A Massachusetts lady came from Weldon yesterday on her was North. She said that the enemy had 50,000 men near the railroad that could be concentrated at Wilmington, Goldsborough, or Weldon in a few hours. I give these items as in connection with others that you may have, that their proper value may be arrived at.

Pryor has been re-enforced somewhat. I cannot learn of any heavy force at Zuni. As the Ninth Corps is for some ulterior end I fear promised forces will not be sent at this time.
