SUFFOLK, VA., April 19, 1863.

Major-General DIX:

General Getty, in conjunction with Lieutenant Lamson's boats, has just stormed the heavy battery at the West Branch, and after severe fighting carried it. Captured six guns and 200 of the Forty-fourth Alabama. Crossed in boats.

I have received your gratifying dispatch. General Getty and the officers and men engaged in storming the battery have my warmest thanks for their gallant conduct. It will be an example for the forces under your command which cannot fail to give us the happiest results.

I see notices from Admiral Lee of doings here, but nothing that I have reported-the silencing of the ten-gun battery on Tuesday by the land batteries and the skirmishing of Colonel Foster.

GENERAL: You will immediately prepare for embarkation, and send to General Dix at Fort Monroe about 4,000 infantry, so as to make in all sent to him about 10,000 men. General Meigs will give you transportation as rapidly as possible.
