GEENAL: I am in receipt of your letter iforming me that you have received telegraphic instructions fromteh honorable Secretary of War to proceed to Columbus, ohio, to organize paroled prisoners for service aginst the Indians in the Norhwest, an asking me to appoint your successor in the command of the forces int the vicnity of Covington and Newport, Ky. Brigadier General A. J. Smith will relieve you in such command. Acept my thanks, geenral, for the zeal with whch you have labored in the discharge of your many and arduyous duties, and the assureance of my warmest wishes for your continued success and welfare.
