23. The Senate having adjourned without confirming the appointment of Brigadier General David Stuart, made by the President, he is hereby relieved from the command of the Fifth Division, Army of the Tennessee, and will proceed to Memphis, Tenn., from where he will report by letter to the Adjutant-General of the Army, Washington, D. C., for orders. In thus relieving Brigadier-General Stuart from duty, the general commanding deems it but justive to a brave, intelligent, and patriotic officer to express his deep regret at the loss to the country of his valuable services in the field, where, by meritorious action, he won the right to the position the favor of the President had conferred.
