call on Brigadier-General Gregg, commanding outpost near New Market, for such aid as you may need, and communicate freely with him. He has enough artillery with him to let you have some whenever you may want it. Be good enough to say to Colonel Fitzhugh Lee (Ninth Cavalry), in any communication you may have with him, that the general commanding would like to have report of the extent and disposition of his lines of pickets as soon as he had established them.

The general commanding desires you to render any aid in your power with either artillery or infantry to the cavalry in your front commanded by Colonel Lee, who has been directed to communicate freely with you, and call for any assistance he may need.
