A similar letter t this I shall address to each of the gentlemen who were at the meeting, and their answer will be sent with this document, for I don't like to misrepresent any one. You will oblige me by sending an answer to-day, as I wish to send up the article to-morrow.*

So far as the looked-for thunderbolts are concerned, I am ready to meet them by a distinct avowal at the proper time and in the proper way, but "not on compulsion" of this sort.

In relation to Quarles' and Baldwin's brigades, the purpose was for temporary service with the Army of Tennessee. When it could consistently be done, it was intended they should be sent back.++
