I have sent a brigade of General Garrard's cavalry over toward Canton to intercept those cattle. Tell General McCook it is important that party represented as 200 strong that has been on the road should be hunted down, else you will have no peace on the road.

Use all the infantry you can spare in connection with cavalry, and interpose so as to prevent the escape up the valley of the Etowah of the party who captured the drove of cattle at Adairsville.

Two hundred and fifty cavalry left at daylight this a. m. for Jasper, by way of Pine Log; 100 more follow at 1 p. m. and 200 by way of Canton to Long Swamp Valley. Will send infantry to Hightower.

The general commanding directs that you collect as strong an infantry force as possible from Rome ad other points at the most favorable place to strike Wheeler on his return; and also to obstruct the passes and crossings of the river, and arrange for giving him ambush reception. Obstruct the roads in order to catch his artillery if possible.
