timely obstructing roads, &c., cavalry can be circumvented. General McCook will give directions to use bodies of cavalry. The posts and block- houses, if defended obstinately, will not be attacked by Wheeler.

You had better fill all the cars you can get with infantry at Rome, Marietta, and Allatoona, and proceed up the road as far as possible to act against Wheeler in concert with what General Steedman will do from the other end of the line. The bridges should be strongly defended, but other points might be stropped of their garrisons to increase the force to the capacity of available cars. Al should move in one group of trains.

Major- General SHERMAN:
I have not been able to communicate with Rome. Have ordered train of cars sent out for two regiments. Do not hear from Marietta. Soon as possible will take two regiments from this place, one from Kingston, and what I get from Rome and Marietta, and go up the road as directed. The cavalry sent ut yesterday have not been heard from Three hundred and fifty were ordered to go out by way of Pine Log to Jasper, and 200 up the river road via Ball Ground to Hannagen in Long Swamp Valley, to intercept the cattle at Hightower. This force was sent out under the information that there was but 300 or 400 of the enemy. The infantry ordered to Canton have been ordered back.

I am just starting up the road with about 2,000 men. Despatch received from Resaca says the rebel force is moving northeast from Dalton; burned a bridge below Dalton, and tore up the track. My cavalry not heard from.
