General SHERMAN:

An officer just from Dalton left there at 7 a. m. Martin's division was moving from the east upon Dalton. Colonel Laiboldt had moved out to feel of them. Skirmishing had commenced. The colonel feels secure.

He has two pieces of artillery. General Smith still here.

I t is very important to resume telegraphic communication with Chattanooga. We have stores enough for two weeks. I want Wheeler opposed at all points and when possible dogged; he can do us no danger up toward Cleveland. If Martin's division be at Spring Place it should be attacked and driven north.

Major- General SHERMAN:

I am just from Tilton. The track south of there will be repaired by 11 o'clock to- night. As soon as repaired I will go by railroad to the break south of Dalton, take with me the section men, and assist in the repairs there. The telegraph, I think, can be repaired to Dalton tomorrow. I will take any dispatch that you wish to send.

GENERAL: Can you send me 300 muskets, caliber 58! I am threatened with an attack by six regiment rebel cavalry, and require the above- mentioned arms to arm dismounted cavalry and convalescents. I will send train for the same.
