The four pieces of artillery are manned, in addition to the number of men reported with my present force. I expect to whip any number brought against me. The bridge will never be destroyed until after the destruction of the garrison.

I have sent to Chattanooga two regiments from Rome, one from Allatoona, one from Etowah, and one from Kingston, to report to General Steedman, last night. Leaves me two small regiments at Allatoona are two at Etowah and this place.

Major-General STEEDMAN:

A company of forty soldiers sent from Resaca met the enemy near Spring Place (at the mills on Connessauga River) from 100 to 200 strong. Our men were repulsed, four of them coming in here this a. m. One of the home guards just arriving, and reports a fight with the rebels near Spring Place last night, in which Captain Woody and another man were wounded.
