GENERAL: The force under General Smith have left their position and gone down to Armstrong. The enemy are advancing on the road I fell back on. Their force is not yet known. I can hear firing in the direction of Armstrong.

GENERAL: Colonel Boyles, on my right, reports a heavy column of infantry moving on his right. There is an interval between his right and Ferguson's brigade. A heavy line advancing on me from the Sandtown road. Their right extends as far west as the first house from Moss'. There can be on doubt but that the enemy have at least one corps.
