Civil War Encampment September 10 -11, 2011
The James A. Garfield National Historic Site will host a Civil War encampment on the weekend of September 10th & 11th. The grounds adjacent to the President Garfield’s home will be the campsites for Union and Confederate reenactors. Regiments from the 7th & 8th Ohio and the 5th Texas and 28th Alabama will take part in programs throughout the day. Visitors can see demonstrations including a regimental parade, marching and firing drills and a bayonet drill performed by the 5th Texas. Members of each regiment will be available to talk with visitors and answer questions about camp life in the 1860’s.
Civilians in period dress will be walking the grounds to demonstrate how those away from the front line managed to cope during the four years of battle. Guests can stroll through the sutlers camp and see authentic clothing and supplies, or stop in an 1860’s tavern for an ice cold root beer. Visit the photographer’s tent and pose for a photograph while dressed in period costume.
Children can participate in the mini militia and learn the basic commands of a soldier. Coats, haversacks, belts and other equipment can be worn by participants. An authentic campsite just for children can be explored throughout the day.
James A. Garfield served two years in the Union Army, starting as a lieutenant colonel and rising to the rank of major general. He commanded the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and led the regiment to victory at the battle of Middle Creek, Kentucky. Later he fought at the battle of Chickamauga, one of the bloodiest battles of the entire Civil War. The encampment is held each summer to honor General Garfield for his service during the war.
The James A. Garfield National Historic Site is located in Mentor, Ohio, just minutes from the Mentor exit off Interstate 90. There is much to do in the area including Mentor-On-The- Lake which has large beach areas and swimming in Lake Erie. Restaurants and hotels are conveniently located throughout the immediate area.
Hours for the Civil War encampment are 11:00 – 4:00 both days. Food is available on site. Admission is free. For additional information call 440-205-3827.
