Middle school students and teachers, experience the Civil War in Tennessee, 1862, with 11-year-old Duane Kinkade.

Up From Corinth by J. Arthur Moore

altWritten especially for students, enjoyed by adults as well, Up From Corinth takes the student reader into the events of the Civil War through the experiences of a peer.  Eleven-year-old Duane Kinkade enters the Civil War through the Battle at Shiloh in search of his father, but faces the mind-numbing explosion of battle, with the death of a close friend, fear, chaos, injury to himself, and an unexpected deep friendship – just the beginning of life in an army on the move.  Up From Corinth is the story of that battle, where Duane falls wounded and ends up in the care of a Union doctor and his teenage ward, who conceal his identity as they nurse him back to health; and the months that follow through the summer and fall of 1862, as the Army of the Ohio moves eastward.  Skirmishes with elements of cavalry, illness, and the hardships of life in an army on the move culminate in full battle at Perryville. Finally, in the winter of 1862-1863, in the aftermath of a bitterly cold and bloody battle at Stones River, Duane is able to begin his trek back to the Confederate Army.

A researched blend of fact and fiction, the reader experiences the events of the war as they happened, and a vivid history lesson unfolds before one’s eyes through the time shared with Duane.

Paul Sanborn, historian, Freedoms Foundation writes of the full story, “I highly recommend this series of four historical novels…researched so that they reflect accurately on the historic period they represent.”

Matt Atkinson, National Battlefield Parks speaker, writes, “…the attention to the five senses – it’s an interesting way to write.  Gives it more of a “you are there” feel than say a strict narrative history.  Congratulations on a fine work.”
