ABOUT THE RECIPIENT, TONY KUSHNER
Born in New York City in 1956, Tony Kushner grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He attended Columbia University and received his B.A. in Medieval Studies in 1978. He then attended New York University’s Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts and graduated in 1984. He received the Pulitzer Prize For Drama in 1993 for his play, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, and also won the Tony Award in both 1993 and 1994. Kushner’s first colaboration with producer/director Steven Spielberg occurred in 2005, when he co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth for Munich and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screen Play. In 2012, he was again nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screen Play for Steven Spielberg’s movie, Lincoln. Perhaps the highest compliment about Lincoln that Kushner received was from a review of the movie by two-time Lincoln Prize Winner, Allen Guelzo, who wrote “Tony Kushner puts into Lincoln’s mouth an explanation of the presidential war powers, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the need for a constitutional amendment to abolish slavery which is so clear that Lincoln himself could have admired it.”
