GBPA prepares annual CW artifact show “magic”

`           June 15, 2015 – It’s the foremost event of its type in the nation and it’s been featured on CBS News’ 60 Minutes program. The Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association is readying the 2015 edition of its Civil War Artifact and Collectibles Show.

The 42nd annual show and sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 in the AllStar Events Complex at the Eisenhower Hotel & Conference Center on Emmitsburg Road in Gettysburg.

The show’s growing reputation is reflected that in each of the last several years, the number of tables used by participants has grown steadily and is again expected to take up more than 300.

“For two days on the weekend in June, we open what amounts to a huge Civil War Museum,” said GBPA President Barb Mowery. But unlike regular museums our Artifact and Collectibles Show lets visitors handle and examine the exhibits.

It’s an opportunity to hold in your own hands something that a soldier of the North or South held in their hands during the four years of the civil war and mementos that were almost sacred to the veterans in the decades afterward.”

There will be more collectibles to examine than one could shake a ramrod at. They include rifles, pistols, swords, hats, buttons, medals, reunion badges, photographs, discharge papers, letters to home, battlefield orders, orders, period newspapers, cannonballs bullets and rare post-war books written by veterans.

Purchase prices can range from just a couple bucks to tens of thousands of dollars.

Admission is $7 per day. Children under 16 are admitted at no charge.

There is an ‘early bird’ special. Beginning at noon on Friday, June 26 a three-day VIP pass can be purchased for $100 that allows a person to shop that day until 7 p.m. that day and be admitted at the dealer entry times on Saturday and Sunday.

A special feature of this year’s show will be appearances by two Civil War book authors. Author Bruce Mowday will be signing his Civil War books. Mowday’s latest book is Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story. His other Civil War book is Unlikely Allies: Fort Delaware’s Prison Community in the Civil War. Author Keith Foote is the writer of Mark the Lines of Your Weary Marches: The Travels and Travails of Battery B, First Pennsylvania Light Artillery.
