U.S. WORLD WAR ONE CENTENNIAL COMMISSION TO PLACE FLAGS AT WASHINGTON DC MEMORIAL ON VETERANS DAY
U.S. WORLD WAR ONE CENTENNIAL COMMISSION TO PLACE FLAGS AT WASHINGTON DC
MEMORIAL ON VETERANS DAY
WASHINGTON DC -- On Wednesday, November 11th, the U.S. World War One
Centennial Commission will place flags at the District of Columbia War
Memorial.
The War Memorial is located on the National Mall, just south of the
Reflecting Pool, and was created in 1931 to honor the 26,000 citizens of
Washington DC who served in the military during World War One.
The Commission will place 499 flags in the ground around the Memorial,
as a gesture to honor the 499 citizens who lost their lives during the
war.
Veterans Day is directly tied to World War One, as it is the anniversary
of Armistice Day, the day that ended that war, famously as the eleventh
hour, or the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. In 1954, Armistice Day
was expanded as a U.S. national holiday in the to honor all veterans.
This year represents the seventh year that the Commission has hosted the
Veterans Day flags event at the Memorial.
The Commission was created by Congress in 2013 to create educational and
commemorative programs regarding American sacrifice in World War One.
The Commission is also working to create a World War One memorial in
Washington, DC with a national scope, to honor all the 4.7 million
American veterans who served, and the 116,516 Americans who lost their
lives. That memorial has been authorized by Congress to be created at
Pershing Park, near 14th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue.
The flags event will take place at 9:00am. For more information, please
