July 8. -Started at daylight; arrived at to of Cumberland [Catoctin] Mountains at 6 p. m. ; started down the mountains at nightfall; arrived at camp near Middletown, Md., at 4 a. m. on 9th instant. July 9. - Four pieces moved at 3 a. m. ; marched 8 miles; camped at Boonsborough, Md., at 5 p. m.

July 10. -Two pieces, under command of Lieutenant Rich, joined the battery at 9 a. m. Marched toward Funkstovn, Md. ; battery took position at 8. 20. At 3. 15, two pieces advanced and went into position, commanding woods in front.

July 11. - At 7 p. m. Lieutenant Rich's section advanced, and fired 4 rounds over Funkstown.

July 12. -Marched at 7 a. m. through Funkstown, and went into position one-half mile beyond the town. Moved farther to left at 5 p. m.

July 13. -Hitched up during the day.

July 14. -Marched at 10. a. m. 8 miles on Williamsport road; camped 3 1/4 miles from the town.

July 15. - Marched at 7 a. m. 20 miles, through Hagerstown and Funkstown; camped at Boonsborough at 4 p. m.

July 16. -Marched at 6 a. m. 12 miles; camped near Berlin, Md.

July 19. -Broke camp at 8 a. m. ; marched through Berlin; crossed Potomac on pontoon bridge; camped at 3. 30 p. m., having marched 11 miles.

July 20. -Marched at 10 a. m. 10 miles; camped at 7. 30 p. m.

July 21. -Changed camp at 11 a. m. ; marched 2 miles.

July 22. - Marched at 2 p. m. 7 miles; camped at Rector's Cross-Roads.

July 23. -Marched at 5. 15 a. m. to Rectortown, Va. ; arrived there at 7. 30 a. m. Started again at 2 p. m. ; camped at 10 p. m. ; marched 10 miles.

July 24. - Marched at 5 a. m. ; halted at 12 m. ; watered, fed, and grazed horses. At 2 p. m. countermarched; went on road leading to Orleans; camped at dusk at Thumb Creek.

July 25. -Left camp at 7 a. m. ; arrived at camp near Warrenton, Va., at 5 p. m. ; marched 15 miles.
