I want all the cavalry kept out of towns, put into the brush, and kept there; not to garrison any point, but kept on the move. Do you think it best to have headquarters at Lexington?

I telegraphed yesterday in reference to resignation of Colonel Jennison, Fifteen Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. Please advise me as to the prospects of its acceptance or non-acceptance. If he is to be tried by court-martial I must retain some officers now here to organize a new court. I make this application at the suggestions of General Sykes, communicated to me by Major Ketner.
