Colonel CAHILL:

You will take all the infantry from Metairie Race-Course, and all from the Cotton Press and United States barracks, and take them to the Algiers depot, where a train will be waiting to take them to the La Fourche Crossing.

You have already been notified to have 100 rounds ammunition and two days' cooked rations in readiness. You will send some reliable officer to take command of this force, and go to the crossing of the Des Allemands and La Fourche, where the enemy are expected in some force.

Colonel Stickney is ordered with his whole force to come to La Fourche Crossing.

I ordered a brigade formed of the unconditional Union men to be put under General [George F.] Shepley. Do you approve or disapprove? Please give me an answer before going too far. Something must be done for this city, and that quickly.
